Program Assistant Introduction Eloy Oliveira COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog The fall semester has officially started at SIPA, which means the admissions program assistants have joined us on staff. We have an amazing group of students this term, and Im excited to have them on staff. Over the next couple of weeks Ill introduce you to our five program assistants for the fall semester. Following their introductions, youll start to hear from each one of them in their own voices on the admissions blog as they share some first-hand knowledge on everything from student life to how to craft the perfect admission essay. But for now, lets welcome Eloy Henrique Saraiva de Oliveira to the team. Eloy is a second-year SIPA student pursuing an MPA degree with a concentration in Energy and Environment and specialization in Management. He holds a B.A. in Law from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Eloy was born and raised in Belo Horizonte, the fourth-largest city in Brazil, with 2.1 million inhabitants. People from his homeland are known for being really friendly, and Eloy is not an exception to that rule. Prior to studying at SIPA, Eloy worked for seven years at the state government of Minas Gerais, Brazil as a consultant, managing major infrastructure projects and public-private partnerships. Eloy also has experience in the nonprofit sector, and he is a member of the Global Shapers, which is a group of young leaders created by the World Economic Forum. After graduation, Eloy plans to help induce growth in developing countries. In a brief QA for the Admissions Blog, he had this to share: Have you taken classes at other Columbia schools? âI have taken a class at the Business School and I liked it very much because it has a different atmosphere from SIPA and students have a very different perspective on the issues we were studying. It is really good to learn new ways to look at the same problem.â What has your internship experience been like? âI did a summer internship at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC. I did a lot of policy research and writing for articles, conference reports, event summaries, grant proposals, and data collection. I also helped prepare international conferences with policy makers and officials to frame the agenda for U.S.-Brazil. It was a great opportunity; and my boss was also a SIPA alumni, which made me feel at home.â What has been the most challenging part of your experience at SIPA? âThe most challenging part has been to keep up with all the events and activities that take place at SIPA daily, and to also focus on the classes and academic work. I think Iâm a much more organized and efficient person now, because of SIPA.â What do you think makes a good SIPA student or what qualities do stellar SIPA students typically possess? âSIPA students come from a lot of different places, but one thing that most SIPA students have in common is the desire to achieve success and contribute to a better world. Theyre also willing to make friends, understand different cultures and help each other. What advice would you give a first-year student? âI think the best advice is to balance everything in your life at SIPA. There are so many things going on at the same time and sometimes it is hard to enjoy everything that the University has to offer you. So, try to balance your classes, but also enjoy the city and all the new friends that you will make here.â [Photo courtesy of Eloy Oliveira | Eloy with his mom, enjoying a beautiful summer date at Washington Square.]

William Faulknerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Barn Burningâ⬠presents the conflict between two forms of justice: (1) justice based on kinship and (2) justice based on human dignity. The conflict between these two forms of justice was presented within the text through Sartyââ¬â¢s perspective of Abââ¬â¢s actions who sought to achieve ââ¬Ëfreedomââ¬â¢ from his previous agreements by defiling the rights of other individuals. Set after the period of the Civil War, the text presents Sartyââ¬â¢s conflicts as he tried to understand his fatherââ¬â¢s motivations for the actions that have led his family to further hardships in life. We will write a custom essay sample on Conflicting Principles of Life in William Faulknerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Barn Burningâ⬠or any similar topic only for you Order Now It is important to note that Ab, Sartyââ¬â¢s father, has a led a life geared towards self-fulfillment as his actions throughout his life have been motivated by his desire to attain material wealth. Note for example that even if Ab was considered as a ââ¬Ësoldierââ¬â¢ in the ââ¬Ëfine, old, European sense,ââ¬â¢ of the term, his motivations for choosing to join in the battle was neither to save the South from the Northern invasion nor to protect his regionââ¬â¢s views regarding slavery (Faulkner 1743). This is apparent if one considers that as Ab and Sarty reached the De Spain mansion, Ab ironically tells his son, ââ¬Å"Pretty and white, ainââ¬â¢t itâ⬠¦. Thatââ¬â¢s Nigger sweat. Maybe it ainââ¬â¢t white enough yet to suit him. Maybe he wants to mix some white sweat with itâ⬠(Faulkner 1737). This statement was neither motivated by Abââ¬â¢s disgust for slavery nor by his disgust in the African Americanââ¬â¢s position in life. His statement was motivated by his sense of outrage against the wealth and power symbolized by the plantation. His outrage statement was thereby meant to be a bitter view against the wealth and power that he could not achieve in life. The conflict, within the text, thereby arises as a result of Sartyââ¬â¢s inability to understand his fatherââ¬â¢s motivations and reasons for his actions. As was mentioned above, his father chose to defile another individualââ¬â¢s rights in order to free himself from his obligations. This is apparent as his father burned the barn of the man who has slighted him. Sarty recognizes the harm that was inflicted upon his father however he does not consider this a sufficient reason to defile the right of another individual. As a result of this, he was placed in a position where he will either amend the harm inflicted on the other individual in order to protect his father and thereby maintain his loyalty to his family or he will refuse knowledge of his fatherââ¬â¢s actions thereby allowing his fatherââ¬â¢s misdeed but enabling justice for the other individual. The conflict is thereby defined by the necessity to choose, on Sartyââ¬â¢s part, what he considers to be ââ¬Ëthe rightââ¬â¢ decision within the text. Entry Marketing Objectives The marketing plan for Blink Camera aims at ensuring the recognition of the companys entry level camera and its multi-feature camera. The company is focused in increasing the sales volume for both entry level camera and its multi-feature camera. To achieve these objectives, the following marketing objectives have been developed:Advertising We will write a custom proposal sample on Entry-Level Camera Marketing Plan Multi-Feature Camera Marketing Plan specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Market penetration; the two products will be sold to existing customer segments Market extension; the two products will be extended to new markets where Blink Camera has never entered before. Promoting the entry level camera among the youth as a user-friendly, affordable and creative camera that meets their photography needs Promoting the multi-feature camera among middle income groups and professional photographers Core Strategy Tar get Markets As stated earlier, the Blink entry-level camera will be targeted more at the youth sector. The companys promotional campaigns and marketing initiatives will target the younger generation in all the regions that the company operates in including Europe, Asia- Pacific, Africa among others. To attract the younger generation to this product, the company will roll out a ââ¬Ëfunââ¬â¢ campaign to promote the Blink entry camera in all the regions where it operates (U.S Small Business Administration, 2012). On the other hand, the multi-feature cameras are more convenient for more mature and financially stable segments of the population. For this reason, the marketing for this product will target the middle income earners and photography professionals. In addition, given the cameras multiple features some people perceive it as complex and difficult to use. To address this challenge the company has produced a user guide that will guide the customers on how to take pictures qu ickly. Competitor targets At present, there are many entry-level camera models in the market. These include products from major global players like Canon, Sony, and Olympus that are promoted widely in the market. Canon will further provide significant competition for Blinks multi-feature camera because it strongly markets its professional models like the 50D and 7D, however, Blink can beat it in the entry-level models if significant marketing is done because it often overlooks its models such like the 1000D. The company projects that its strong marketing campaign for its entry level and the multi-feature camera in both new and established markets will help it capture a significant market share by gaining popularity among the population because of enhanced product awareness. Blinks competitive edge Blinks entry level camera has an affordable price of $ 300 compared to the ones offered by rivals which cost $ 150 on average. The better price offered by Blink will give its customers goo d value for their money coupled with features that are quite similar to the expensive ones. In addition, the user guide that comes with the multi-feature camera provides an easy to use interface that can help professional photographers and personal users to gain confidence in using the multi-feature camera with a step-by-step guide and inspiration. Such a feature is not available in the models that the competitors offer.Advertising Looking for proposal on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Marketing Mix Product For both products, the company will provide three-hour training for the buyers for them to gain an understanding of their respective cameras and their features. This will build their confidence in handling their cameras. Promotion The company will hold road shows in polytechnics, colleges and tertiary institutions to attract the youth segment who are the main customers for the entry level cam era, use will also be made of the social network particularly Twitter and Face book. On the other hand, the multi-feature camera will be marketed through television and newspaper advertisements and demonstrations to selected media houses (Marketing Donut, 2012). Price All the products will be relatively cheaper than those of the completion (Smith, 2010). The entry level camera will sell at $ 50 while the multi-feature camera will go at $ 500. Place The company already has dealers in all its major markets; however it will recruit new dealers in its new market segments. For this the two brands will be readily available to customers. The dealer shops will equally offer after sales services where customers can service or repair their products. People As a company, Blink will recruit training staff who will offer complimentary training to users of Blink cameras. In addition, marketing staff will be recruited who will carry out the promotion for the two brands. Budget The companys marketi ng budget will be based on profits. That is the companies advertising will be a percent of the previous years profits. As the products move toward their growth stage the marketing budget will be reduced accordingly. The company will use 6 % of the previous years profits as its marketing budget. References Marketing Donut. (2012). Marketing Strategy: How do you market an expensive item? How to Manage and Identify Sourwood Sourwood is a tree for all seasons and is found in the forest understory, along roadsides and a pioneering tree in clearings. A member of the heath family, Oxydendrum arboreum is primarily a hill country tree that has a range from Pennsylvania to the Gulf Coastal Plain. The leaves are dark, lustrous green and appear to weep or hang from the twigs while branches droop toward the ground. Branching patterns and persistent fruit give the tree an interesting look in the winter. Sourwood is one of the first trees to turn fall colors in the Eastern forest. By late August, it is common to see foliage of young sourwood trees along roadsides beginning to turn red. The fall color of sourwood is a striking red and orange and associated with blackgum and sassifras. It is an early summer bloomer and gives fresh flower color after most flowering plants have faded. These flowers also provide the nectar for bees and the very tasty and sought out sourwood honey. Specifics Scientific name: Oxydendrum arboreumPronunciation: ock-sih-DEN-drum ar-BORE-ee-umCommon name(s): Sourwood, Sorrel-TreeFamily: EricaceaeUSDA hardiness zones: USDA hardiness zones: USDA hardiness zones: 5 through 9AOrigin: Native to North AmericaUses: recommended for buffer strips around parking lots or for median strip plantings in the highway; shade tree; specimen; no proven urban toleranceAvailability: somewhat available, may have to go out of the region to find the tree Special Uses Sourwood is occasionally used as an ornamental because of its brilliant fall color and mid-summer flowers. It is of little value as a timber species but the wood is heavy and is used locally for handles, firewood and in mixture with other species for pulp. Sourwood is important as a source of honey in some areas and sourwood honey is marketed locally. Description Sourwood usually grows as a pyramid or narrow oval with a more or less straight trunk at a height of 25 to 35 feet but can reach 50 to 60 feet tall with a spread of 25 to 30 feet. Occasionally young specimens have a more open spreading habit reminiscent of Redbud.Crown density: denseGrowth rate: slowTexture: medium Leaves Leaf arrangement: alternateLeaf type: simpleLeaf margin: entire; serrulate; undulateLeaf shape: lanceolate; oblongLeaf venation: banchidodrome; pinnateLeaf type and persistence: deciduousLeaf blade length: 4 to 8 inchesLeaf color: green Fall color: orange; red Fall characteristic: showy Trunk and Branches Trunk/bark/branches: droop as the tree grows, and will require pruning for vehicular or pedestrian clearance beneath the canopy; not particularly showy; should be grown with a single leader; no thornsPruning requirement: needs little pruning to develop a strong structureBreakage: resistantCurrent year twig color: green; reddishCurrent year twig thickness: medium; thin Pests and Diseases Pests are usually not a problem for Sourwood. Fall webworm can defoliate portions of the tree in summer and fall but usually control is not needed. As far as diseases, twig blight kills leaves at the branch tips. Trees in poor health seem to be more susceptible. Prune out infected branch tips and fertilize. Leaf spots can discolor some leaves but are not serious other than causing premature defoliation. Culture Light requirement: tree grows in part shade/part sun; tree grows in full sunSoil tolerances: clay; loam; sand; acidic; well-drainedDrought tolerance: moderateAerosol salt tolerance: moderate In Depth Sourwood grows slowly, adapts to sun or shade, and prefers a slightly acid, peaty loam. The tree transplants easily when young and from containers of any size. Sourwood grows well in confined soil spaces with good drainage making it a candidate for urban plantings but is largely untried as a street tree. It is reportedly sensitive to air pollution injury Irrigation is required during hot, dry weather to keep leaves on the tree. Reportedly not highly drought tolerant, but there are beautiful specimens in USDA hardiness zone 7 growing in the open sun in poor clay with no irrigation.
